Father and son duo reel in huge 1.6m, 21kg barracuda

ALAN Hancock and his son didn't expect to bring back a monster catch during their overnight fishing trip at the Gutters in Hervey Bay on Sunday night.

The pair slept on the boat after the fish went off the bite, but at 6am the next morning they were up and ready to go.

On the reef, he tossed out the line armed with prawns and squid and waiting to strike was a monster fish.

"When it first hooked I thought it was a shark," he said.

On the line was a 1.6m, 21kg barracuda.

For 10 minutes, Mr Hancock reeled the barracuda in while it attempted to swim away, taking 70m of line at a time.

With the Australian record at 24.4kg, Mr Hancock was proud to catch this fish.
