Textiles talent at school expo

THERE were casual ones, formal ones, cheeky ones, comfy ones and even plastic ones at the Lismore Worker’s Club last night.

Hundreds turned out for the bi-annual North Coast Combined High Schools Textiles Expo, showcasing garments and textiles from students from Years 8 to 12.

About 250 students from 12 high schools took part in the fashion and textile night of nights with a parade and static display.

Non-apparel items including bags, furnishings and textile art formed a static display.

Expo co-ordinator Kerri Woods said the event included a small number of garments which were major HSC textile projects for 2010. She said younger students found inspiration from the graduating designers.

“It gives all the students the chance to see the work of other students and be inspired by work they may think about doing in the future,” Mrs Woods said.

“The degree of difficulty increases in the older years, when there’s a lot more surface design and decorative embellishment.”

Kadina High School student Eliza Watson used a character from a children’s book to inspire a fairy costume that formed her HSC major work for this year.

Miss Watson also gained the attention of judges in the Queensland Bridal Awards last year.

Although only in Year 11 at the time, she gained a Highly Commended for a bridal gown she designed without the use of a pattern. Year 10 Kadina student Shara Davis was lucky enough to model the wedding gown last night.
