Farewell to Byron Bay preschool

It was a bittersweet day for many as a crowd of nearly 100 gathered last Saturday to farewell the Byron Bay Preschool’s Jonson Street centre.

After 30 years on the Jonson Street site, the preschool is moving to new premises at Coogera Circuit in Baywood Chase, Suffolk Park.

Former preschool co-director Ann McCabe said the move was a bittersweet one.

“I’m devastated, but I’ve had a ball here,” she said.

“This is a very special place.”

Mrs McCabe acknowledged past and present teachers and especially thanked assistant Lee Elliott for her long association with the preschool.

Present director Victoria Handley said it was great to see so many old faces at the farewell.

“We have created a wonderful place for children here,” she said.

Reverend Hilary Singleton from the Anglican Church in Byron Bay blessed the move to the new site.

She said the past 30 years had been a wonderful adventure and a joint effort between the church and the preschool committee.

“This is a happy place and it’s not the end,” Reverend Hilary said.

Old photos and memorabilia were on display and a cake was cut to commemorate the day.
