Family fun focus of NAIDOC week

Family fun was the focus of NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week celebrations at Byron Bay last Thursday enjoyed in brilliant winter sunshine in Denning Park at Main Beach.

After a welcome by Arakwal elder, Aunty Dulcie Nicholls, the crowd enjoyed Aboriginal dance performances from the Arakwal Dubay Dancers and the Baygil Nali Jagun Aboriginal men's dance group who got members of the audience involved in traditional dances.

There also were musical performances and a free community barbecue which, as well as traditional sausage sandwiches, also featured traditional bush tucker.

NAIDOC celebrations are held in July each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
