Facebook will begin screening its own original TV shows
FACEBOOK is planning to broadcast its own Netflix-style TV shows, according to insiders.
Sources close to the secretive video project revealed that "a dozen" shows which are between five and 30 minutes long will appear on its video tab in the coming months.
Zuckerberg has hired popular viral site CollegeHumor's founder Ricky Van Veen to manage the project, sources revealed to Business Insider.
There will be two tiers of programming.
One will consist of 30 minute long TV-style family shows and the other will be viral clips of no longer than ten minutes which will vanish within 24 hours.
The longer productions are tipped to be similar to Netflix's offerings, with insiders comparing them to House of Cards.
A virtual reality dating programme where people are introduced through a headset before meeting in the flesh is already in the works, the sources added.
Rumours also suggest that Hollywood A-listers will take part, although Facebook has been keeping any details under wraps.
It created a new app for the Apple and Samsung TV called Facebook Video in March, but it's understood the aim is to keep the shows in the video tab you see on its homepage.
Rumours suggest the new service will be launched on June 17, when the Cannes Lions advertising festival takes place.
