EXCLUSIVE: First sign of snow sighted in Queensland

THEY don't call it 'brass monkey season' in the Granite Belt for nothing with the first sighting of snow this morning.

Right on cue after Tuesday's winter solstice Eukey resident Warren Harvey described seeing very fine flakes that didn't settle.

"At first when it hit you on the face I thought it was sleet but looking at it towards the sun you could definitely see it was flakes, very fine tiny ones that were just on the verge of proper snow," Mr Harvey said.

"Being a farmer I don't like it too much with cattle calving and that sort of thing but for the sake of the tourists I hope there's a little more to come."

Others also reported seeing sleet in Stanthorpe about 7am.

Residents have been predicting it for days and the Bureau of Meteorology hasn't dashed their hopes.

The temperature is expected to drop down to -1 degrees on Saturday and -3 degrees on Sunday in Stanthorpe.

Annabelle Ford, a forecaster from the Bureau of Meteorology, said light rain was expected in Stanthorpe on Friday.

"On Friday night cold dry air will push through but we're not expecting any snow.

"Stanthorpe will get below zero on the weekend so we're expecting frost in that area.

"The latest information is showing a small chance of snow and, more likely, sleet on Monday night."

A cold front is moving through southern Australia that is causing the cold conditions.
