Erotic tome fetches $7000

A BOOK of acclaimed German-Australian photographer Helmut Newton's works has been sold by a Eumundi book store for $7000.

The 400-page limited edition Helmut Newton Sumo was recently purchased by an unidentified Australian collector and features the photographer's most famous images.

The late Mr Newton, who was part Jewish and fled Nazi Germany in 1938 before later settling for a period in Australia, was lauded for his work in the fashion industry and his taste for the erotic.

Paul Berkelouw of Berkelouw Books, who sold the copy of Helmut Newton Sumo, said the book was the photographer's most prized offering.

Mr Berkelouw said only 1000 signed original copies of the book were printed and, given it weighed about 30kg, it came with a custom-made stand.

“Newton was one of the 20th century's best known fashion photographers, who was especially famous for his many studies of nude women,” he said.

Mr Newton died in California in 2004, having made his name as a fashion photographer in the 1970s-80s.
