English clubs have mixed results in Europa League
ENGLISH clubs had a mixed night in the first legs of the Europa League quarter-finals, with Newcastle losing, Chelsea winning and Tottenham Hotspur held to a draw.
Fernando Torres scored twice as Chelsea beat Russian side Rubin Kazan 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, while Spurs lost Gareth Bale to an ankle injury in a 2-2 draw with Swiss side Basel at White Hart Lane.
Newcastle lost 3-1 to Benfica in Lisbon.
