Ela soaks it up on development tour
BYRON Bay surf lifesaver Ela Heiniger has just returned from an Under-18 development tour of New Zealand.
Heiniger was one of 12 athletes selected from NSW for the five-day tour.
"Development squads like these open up a lot of doors for the future," she said.
"Being able to train with international coaches is a really great opportunity to improve technique and learn new things.
"It was great meeting new people, racing with other athletes and bonding with the team."
Cudgen's Kendal Fitzgibbons was the other Far North Coast branch member in the team.
They competed in the New Zealand Pool Rescue Championships as part of the program.
The team won a total of 13 medals including four gold in relay events.
"The Kiwis are the world champions when it comes to pool rescue competition," NSW Surf Lifesaving surf sports manager Dan Pearce said.
"So to have our development team take part in the New Zeal-and national championships is a great opportunity for our team on the international stage.
"These athletes will no doubt go on to push for selection in state and national teams."
