Drunk who let 7-year-old drive him home jailed

A DRUNK man who allowed a seven-year-old boy to drive him home has been sentenced 10 months jail.

Tehere Maaka appeared in the Auckland District Court this morning.

It was his fourth drink-driving charge and Judge Christopher Field said the sentence of imprisonment was necessary to protect the community and deter others from similar offending.

The court heard details of how the 7-year-old boy, who has name suppression, was driving with his small arms wrapped around the steering wheel, and his chin an inch away from the steering wheel.

The judge has suppressed the relationship between the man and the child.
