Photography project aims to celebrate indigenous diversity

LEVI-CRAIG Murray is on a mission to celebrate the diversity of indigenous Australia, and he needs your help.

Mr Murray wants to create a more accurate representation of indigenous people through his photography project Modern Indigenous Australia.

"Growing up, I come from politicians and teachers in my family," he said.

"It's always this one-dimensional view of indigenous Australia.

"I want to discourage that."

The fifth generation South Burnett resident is now searching for any people across Australia who identify as indigenous.

"There's probably some people I walk past and don't even realise," Mr Murray said.

"I wanted to show it is a whole heap of different shapes, sizes and colours too.

"I've got plenty of friends and family as well who are incredibly diverse.

"My friend is Italian-Aboriginal, my niece is Dutch-Aboriginal."

Mr Murray first thought of the concept three years ago, but said it had been difficult to get off the ground.

"It's been really tough. The art world is super competitive," he said.

Mr Murray is a qualified teacher with a degree in indigenous linguistics, but has loved photography since he was young.

"My whole life has been working with people," he said.

"I grew up with a camera."

Mr Murray said photography was a powerful medium to give an accurate visual representation of indigenous culture.

"We visually consume the world with Instagram and Facebook," he said.

"We're obsessed with that."
