THE sound of Hindi music spun in the background. Colorful old fishing boats overflowing with green coconuts. Spiced-up, hawker-style street food peppering the beach. Nope, this is not Mumbai. This is London. Well, technically at least.
From the maker’s of Dishoom – a Covent Garden restaurant inspired by Bombay’s 19th century cafés – comes this one of a kind, pop-up on now until early October.
In what resembles a tripped-out Indian beach shack, Dishoom Chowpatty Beach Bar has set-up shop along the sand strewn promenade on London’s South Bank. Created in “jugaad” style – a hindi word for “creative improvisation” – the space is an imaginative mash-up of old materials, bright furnishings, and bold decorations.
And then there is the food. With an unabashed nod to Bombay food stalls, this pop-up offers everything from classic curries, to Indian-inspired beach snacks like vada pau – spiced potato and chutney served in a bun, an apparent “Bombay obsession” – to the Dishoom Frankie made of fresh naan filled with spicy minced lamb.
To wash it all down, check out their well-loved Gola Ices – a sort of Bombayite slush puppy made of shaved ice, packed on a stick, doused with syrup, and if you’re feeling naughty, a touch of alcohol too.
So, if you’re looking to take a holiday without leaving London, then Dishoom Chowpatty Beach Bar is sure satisfy.
