Byron Bay v Murwillumbah

A committed defensive display kept the Byron Bay Red Devils out of trouble in the opening NRRRL game at Red Devil Park on Sunday.

The Devils eventually won 30-18 after trailing Murwillumbah Mustangs 18-16 with 20 minutes remaining.

The Bay’s poor ball handling and silly penalties allowed the Mustangs an abundance of opportunities, but their physical defence limited Murwillumbah’s ability to score.

In the final quarter, the Bay began to dominate and the passes started to stick with Clarence Kelly and coach Simon Kelly turning the screws with great individual tries.

Best for the Bay were Sam Barnes and Lloyd Bowen.

The reggies won comfortably 36-12 highlighting the club’s depth in 2010. Ben Webber, Eli Colby and Brett Kelly were the standouts.

This Sunday the Bay take on Evans Head away.

Mullumbimby Giants travelled to Maclean last Sunday to take on premiers Lower Clarence and came away with a 22-all draw. Mullum reserves won 32-4, with the under 18s also scoring a win, 38-6. This weekend, Mullum take on Tweed Coast at home.
