RAFAEL Nadal and Roger Federer will have to wait until next year to meet at the US Open after Juan Martin del Potro upset Federer in the quarter-final in New York.
The veterans had been scheduled to face each other in the last four of the final grand slam of the year but the 24th seed played party-pooper with a 7-5 3-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-4 to revive memories of his 2009 US Open final win over the Swiss star.
Incredibly, the upset victory means that Federer and Nadal - who advanced to the semi-final earlier with a straight-sets demolition of young Russian Andrey Rublev - have still never met at the US Open.
Del Potro took the first set after breaking the world No.3 in the 11th game before Federer fought back to take the second.
After racing to a 4-1 lead in the third set, Del Potro lost four of the next five games as the pair went into a tiebreak.
Del Potro saved four set points before winning the breaker 10-8.
The Argentine broke in the fifth game of the final set and never looked back to seal a showdown with Nadal.
