Dawson MP hits out at reports of party in-fighting

DAWSON Coalition MP George Christensen has dismissed claims of conflict within the LNP over differing views on same-sex marriage.

Brisbane Times reports the issue is now proving headaches for Prime Minister Tony Abbott, as some right-wing colleagues rail against the idea that same-sex marriage is inevitable.

Mr Christensen said it was akin to the in-party backlash faced by former Coalition Leader Malcolm Turnbull as he attempted to support the then-Labor Government's carbon tax.

"The party policy to retain the definition of marriage as contained in the Marriage Act is supported by the majority of Liberal and National MPs and senators and I'd say many of them would hold the view that this is what our party stands for," Mr Christensen said.

"To many it would be both bizarre and a slap in the face to our grassroots members to suggest that the conservative parties adopt a policy which says we don't have a stance on marriage and everyone can be a free agent and vote how they want," the publication reported.

Mr Christensen vented on social media, even as he called for a national plebiscite on allowing same-sex marriage.

"Marriage is a cultural institution and culture is something that is determined by the people, not by politicians," Mr Christensen said.

"I don't think it should be up to 200 or so politicians in Canberra to make cultural decisions."
