RUGBY league hard man Dale Shearer broke down in tears today as he faced a media scrum to answer questions about his drink-driving conviction.

Magistrate Tom Killeen refused to allow the former State of Origin great leave to appear by mobile phone and a tight-lipped Mr Shearer strode into face the consequences of his “out of character” behaviour around 11.10am.

After pleading guilty to charges of driving with undue care and attention with a blood alcohol level of 0.187, Shearer fought back tears while facing the media.

He was fined  $1000 and given a 12 month driving disqualification.

But he admitted he was more upset about almost costing his sons their father, particularly as they were still grieving the 2008 death of their mother Delyse.

He was was asked if he thought about how close he came to dying in the high-speed wreck of his silver Porsche SUV on February 21, 2009.

The emotionally devastated, Mr Shearer who lives at Peregian Springs, never finished the sentence – but during the half-hour court case, his boys Jesse and Jakson had been on his mind.

“I really wanted the licence for my children,” he told Mr Killeen.
