Cutting publishers out of the equation

MANY aspiring authors know the pain of having their manuscript repeatedly rejected, but three local writers have found a hassle-free way to get published and avoid the dreaded rejection letter.

Buddina couple Karen and Bill Campbell and Karen's business partner, Katrina Kahler, have found success self-publishing books on Amazon.com, the world's largest online retailer.

Mrs Campbell and Mrs Kahler began publishing on Amazon.com eight months ago, using their experience as primary school teachers to write early reading, parenting, children's and young adult books.

But it was when Mr Campbell decided to have a crack at self-publishing that the group really saw the benefit.

The Buddina State School teacher's first book, Diary of an Almost Cool Girl, achieved top-100 sales in the UK at Kindle on Boxing Day.

With about two million books for sale on Amazon, Mrs Campbell said it was a remarkable achievement.

"Authors such as John Grisham, James Patterson, Tom Clancy, Dan Brown and Suzanne Collins sat beside Bill in the UK top 100," she said.

With the book selling thousands of copies each month, largely in the US and UK, Mrs Campbell said the move had made the couple much more financially stable. "Self-publishing is very lucrative with each book potentially earning the author 70% of the purchase price," she said.
