Cruise sure to hook crafty travellers

AN AUSSIE cruise agency has come up with a high seas adventure sure to hook crafty travellers.

Cruise Express has launched its first crochet cruise - a nine-night South Pacific voyage aboard Celebrity Solstice in March next year.

The cruise is aimed at crocheters of all skill levels.

French for "hooked needle'' and dating back to the 1820s, crochet is enjoying a revival as a simple activity that calms the nerves and allows those engaged in the craft to express their creativity, produce beautiful designs and forge friendships with fellow yarn lovers.

The inaugural crochet cruise on board Celebrity Solstice sails round-trip from Sydney on March 21 with four relaxing days at sea and four ports of call - the Isle of Pines, Lifou and Noumea in New Caledonia and Mystery Island in Vanuatu.

The trip will be led by two of Australia's top crochet teachers - blogger and pattern book author Jenny King, and Crochet Australia owner Lynda Tomkins.

Crocheters will have the opportunity to join workshops to make one of five designs they can take home at the end of the cruise.

Guests will also crochet squares for large Dream Weaver blankets that will be auctioned during the cruise to raise money for Learning Links, a charity that assists children with learning problems.

Every guest will receive a welcome kit worth more than $250 containing everything they need to get started including yarn, hooks, needles, cutters and patterns.

Various "hook-up'' get-togethers and events including a cocktail function and fashion parade are scheduled.

The 2850-passenger Celebrity Solstice is a 14-deck ship that boasts three pools, six jacuzzis, 11 dining venues, nine bars and lounges, stage shows, a spacious gym and spa sanctuary, a ship-top lawn and croquet area and deck chairs and sofas.
