WHEN Proserpine pool builder Carl Parkhill went for a drive, the last thing he expected to see was a three-metre crocodile just 10 metres from the side of the Bruce Hwy at Lethebrook.

Mr Parkhill was travelling at the regulatory 100kmh on Monday afternoon when he noticed the reptile about 1.30pm.

He drove home to collect his camera and returned to the site about one hour later, where he was able to take some snaps.

"That star picket you can see - that's the boundary of the property off the highway," he said.

"The croc was only about 10 metres off the road, just sitting there."

Mr Parkhill said he was "a bit shocked" but it was a cold day and the reptile was obviously sunning itself.

"But it's a good reminder for all the people who go fishing there to keep away because there are some big crocs in there."

Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) wildlife director Rebecca Williams said while the crocodile sighting had not been reported to EHP, "this is known crocodile country and people should always exercise caution when in the area".

She said EHP rangers would visit the location and erect temporary "recent sighting" signs.

Crocodile surveys conducted in 2009 revealed the Proserpine River had the highest crocodile density in the region.

A total of 26 crocodiles were spotted in an 18km stretch of the river, indicating a density of 1.22 per kilometre of water.

Rocky Dam Creek, 17km south of Sarina, boasted six crocodiles in a 13km stretch of river, while the Pioneer River survey failed to uncover any crocodiles in a 12km stretch. Murray Creek, east of Calen, recorded two crocodiles in 13km of river in 2010.

Crocodile sightings can be reported to EHP on 1300 130 372. The department investigates all crocodile reports it receives.
