'KP' declares himself ready for Test cricket

NEW South Wales batsman and Ashes contender Kurtis Patterson has shaken off the burden of high expectations and says he is ready for the step up to Test cricket.

Speaking on the Cricket Unfiltered podcast, Patterson was adamant his game is ready for the rigours of an Ashes series.

"I personally feel like my game is good enough to play at that level but I have to go out there and show it by scoring big runs at Shield level," Patterson said on the podcast.

Patterson opened up on the highs and lows of professional cricket since blasting on to the scene in 2011 when he became the youngest ever batsman to score a Sheffield Shield century at the tender age of 18 years and 206 days old.

With that early success came a NSW contract and a difficult adjustment period for the young man dubbed a future star.

"At times I was a bit lazy and at times I overtrained and I also probably placed too much expectation on myself," Patterson said.

He then found himself out of the NSW side and struggling to score runs in Sydney first grade cricket.

But the wheel has turned and in the last two Shield seasons he has been a model of consistency scoring 1405 runs at 48.44.

At 24 he is now a seasoned campaigner and there was speculation he was headed for a Test berth last summer but Nic Maddinson was preferred.

Now he has another opportunity to break into the Test team as he is amongst a handful of contenders locked in an intense battle for the number six spot in the Aussie batting line up.

Listen to his hopes for the summer on our launch episode of the "Cricket Unfiltered" podcast.
