THE North Queensland Cowboys are believed to have appointed Paul Green as their coach for next season.

Speculation on Monday suggested Sea Eagles assistant Brad Arthur was going to get the nod, but reports yesterday suggested Cowboys officials had informed Green he had had the job.

Green is currently the Roosters' under-20s coach, and is assisting the first-grade side with its preparations for the grand final against Manly this Sunday.

Green (pictured) gained the nod over Melbourne's Kevin Walters, Trent Barrett, Brisbane assistant Kristian Woolf and Arthur.

It was understood he told Roosters officials the news yesterday.

Green is in his first season with the Roosters after coaching Wynnum Manly to back-to-back grand final wins in the Queensland Cup.

He played for the Cowboys in 1999 and 2000 after a long stint with Cronulla.

Green is also a former Roosters, Parramatta and Broncos halfback, who played 10 Origins for Queensland.

The news means Knights coach Wayne Bennett, who has been mentioned as a possible contender for the Cowboys' job last week, will stay in Newcastle.

Green is contracted at the Roosters until the end of next season, but the club will let him move to Townsville for his head coaching opportunity.

The 40-year-old is believed to have support at the Cowboys, with board member Ben Ikin having worked alongside him at Wynnum Manly.
