Councils sign on for asbestos dump scheme
AT LEAST one-third of Australian homes contain a hidden killer lurking behind walls, under the carpet and on the roof.
It may sound like a scene out of Cape Fear, but this silent assassin is a lot closer to home.
Local governments across NSW have joined a pilot program offering households incentives of $50 a tonne to dump their bonded asbestos once and for all.
23 councils have signed on to the NSW Environmental Protection Authority scheme, subsidises dumping costs, waives the asbestos disposal levy (up to $120.90 in some areas) and can even earn participants a bit of money.
EPA director of waste and resource recovery Steve Beaman said the program aimed to reduce the instances in illegally dumped asbestos waste in NSW.
"If in good condition and left undisturbed, asbestos generally doesn't pose a health risk," he said.
"However, with the aging of homes, the popularity of DIY, renovating, knock-down-rebuild and with the redevelopment of old fibro home sites, it's important that anyone working in or around homes or buildings constructed or renovated before 1987 know the dangers of asbestos and how to manage it safely."
The program will run for the next 12 months.
