Council waives $2000 in fees as Schoolies Hub struggles

WITH just two weeks until Schoolies Week hits Byron Shire, organisers of the cash-strapped Schoolies Hub have received a welcome boost from Byron Shire Council of almost $2000.

At Thursday's meeting councillors unanimously approved a mayoral minute that will see council waive fees of $1970 for the Byron Schoolies' Safety Response Group's temporary licences.

Co-ordinator of the Schoolies Hub Nicqui Yadzi said after losing business and council funding worth about $13,000 earlier this year, yesterday's decision was welcome.

"Given that we lost money from council and didn't get any contribution from Byron United, it certainly made it hard for us to come up with the money this year," she said. "We started way behind the eight ball but we have now made basic budget with no room for extras.

"We have a great group of volunteers on board and I am confident we can do the job."

The Schoolies Hub runs from November 15 through to December 2, providing information, assistance and first aid to ensure school leavers enjoy a safe stay in Byron Bay.
