Commercial fisher banned after green zone offences

A COMMERCIAL fisher has been banned from fishing in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park after repeatedly fishing in no-take zones.

The fisher, the marine park authority said in a statement, had been banned after three convictions on fishing in the green zones in the past five years.

Authority field management director Richard Quincey said the ban was for two years, and reef users needed to be aware of the rules.

"This penalty emphasises the importance that's placed on protecting no-take areas and the seriousness of these illegal fishing offences," he said.
