Coastal protection works at Belongil Beach

Environment Minister Robyn Parker and Minister for the North Coast Don Page announced $300,000 for coastal protection works at Belongil Beach.

During a visit to Byron Bay Ms Parker said the funds are being provided to Byron Shire Council for coastal protection works after extensive damaged by recent storms.

"The NSW Government is committed to working with local communities to help protect and promote the State's coastal environment," Ms Parker said.

"Belongil Beach has a long history of coastal erosion, with public and private property at risk during severe storms.

"There are no simple solutions to coastal erosion along this stretch of the coast and these works will assist council to manage immediate impacts of the waves, while working to develop long-term solutions for the area."

"The NSW Government's Coastal Management Program is helping communities by providing technical and funding support to help them assess and address coastal hazards."

Mr Page said Belongil Beach is a coastal erosion hotspot with 21 houses currently at risk from coastal erosion during severe storms.

"This funding will enable the use of rocks as an alternative to the existing geobags (as per council resolution) for the protection of the Manfred Street public access area on Belongil Spit," Mr Page said.

"In order to assess and address coastal hazards, Byron Shire Council is currently preparing a coastal zone management plan for the Byron Bay coastline including Belongil Beach, with ongoing financial and technical assistance from the NSW Government."
