DALBY’S Karingal Nursing Home could be shut down after Federal Ageing minister Justine Elliot ordered an investigation into how an 89-year-old war veteran was attacked by mice.

A war veteran, 89, had his ears chewed and head so badly bitten by mice on Anzac Day at Dalby Hospital's nursing home that nurses found him severely distressed with his hands covered in blood.

Mrs Eliot ordered the independent Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency to conduct a major investigation into the procedures and processes at Karingal.

Mrs Elliot said while Queensland Health and the nursing home reported they were handling the situation, the Department of Health and Ageing would take further action if necessary.

"My immediate concern remains for the health, safety and well being of residents living in the home," Mrs Elliot said.

"These reports are extremely disturbing and traumatic for residents and their families."

Queensland Health has rostered additional staff and implemented a baiting and trapping program in an effort to rid the nursing home of mice.

Residents of the nursing home have been given the option of moving because of the mouse infestation.
