Close down Kings Beach? NPWS plans revealed!

If you read the detail of the Government’s new plan for Broken Head Nature Reserve, you’ll see a thinly veiled attempt to close down the Kings Beach carpark – and with it, to make access to Kings Beach near impossible.

The draft Plan of Management (PoM) for Broken Head Nature Reserve includes a proposal to close the Kings Beach car-park, and replace the 300m access track from the current car-park, with a 1.3 km hike from Broken Head, up and over the ridge to the beach.

A number of spurious environmental reasons are given – none of which are really valid given that the whole park is bounded by the gravel Seven Mile Beach Road.

The importance of Kings Beach to the community – and to local businesses - is not mentioned once in the draft Plan. One wonders whether this is a thinly-veiled attempt to discriminate against the many gay men who use the beach …. and have done since the 1940s.

Is this just thinly-veiled homophobia by NPWS and the Broken Head Board of Management? Or another use of the PoM process by NPWS to make public access to popular sites more difficult?

The draft Plan is available on the web (Search: Broken Head Plan of Management) but submissions close on February 25. (The proposal to close access to Kings Beach is on pages 29-31 of the PoM.)
