Lisa Wilkinson and David Campbell to host candlelit carols
CHRISTMAS TV viewing wouldn't be complete without the Carols.
Joining six-time Carols by Candlelight host Lisa Wilkinson this year is Mornings co-host David Campbell.
The long-time Carols performer is trading his usual singing slot for co-hosting duties alongside Wilkinson in Tuesday's 76th annual event at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
This year is also a milestone for singer Anthony Callea, who will celebrate his 10th anniversary as a Carols performer.
Joining him on stage will be The Voice's Harrison Craig, Rachel Leahcar and Darren Percival, along with long-time favourites Marina Prior, Denis Walter, Silvie Paladino, David Hobson and Tim Campbell.
David Campbell took a few minutes out from his Carols preparations to tell the Guide about his favourite Chrissie memories and what he's asked Santa for this year.
Q: You've performed at the Carols plenty of times before, but are you nervous/excited about hosting for the first time?
A: It is such a special event for everyone watching so even as a singer, you are nervous about not stuffing it up. I am nervous to host but I am in safe hands with the beautiful Lisa Wilkinson. We will have a great time.
Q: Has Lisa given you any wise words of advice as a six-time Carols co-host?
A: Not as yet. Should she? Oh God, now I am worried....
Q: There are some great performers lined up this year. Which are you most looking forward to seeing perform live?
A: I have no favourites as host. Also, most of them have done Carols with me for many years, how could I possibly choose? It will be nice to see the new guard have a go at a carol or two.
Q: What marks the start of the festive season for you?
A: Putting up the tree and decorating it to my ever-extending Christmas iMix: 76 festive songs and counting.
Q: What Christmas songs do you listen to at home?
A: Most singers love Christmas songs. They are written in a classic style and are timeless. Dean Martin is always standard with a bit of Mel Torme and Natalie Cole. I loved Rod's (Stewart) album last year. Also a cheeky Boney M sneaks in as well as the David Bowie/ Bing Crosby duet.
Q: What were some of your family's Christmas traditions growing up?
A: My Grandma used to do a treasure hunt with clues. Then we would have a party on Boxing Day, which is very English.
Q: Favourite Carols memory from your six years as a performer?
A: Definitely when my dad (Jimmy Barnes) and I performed. It was a great moment for us and it seems to resonate with people still to this day.
Q: What would you want Santa to put in your stocking this year?
A: More naps please Santa!
