NOT many people can say the first time they voted in an election they voted for themself.

Next month Bethany McAlpine will be able to say it after being announced as the Christian Democratic Party's candidate for the seat of Cowper.

"I acknowledge I'm young, but young Australians have concerns about our country and I want their voice to be heard," Miss McAlpine said.

Born and raised in Grafton, Miss McAlpine became interested in politics through her parents' political campaigning over many years, leading to the formation of the Young Christian Democratic Party.

Those years have certainly seen the young candidate form some very strong views to become part of her campaign platform.

"I am concerned about the moral direction of our nation and the necessity of protecting the family unit," she said.

"Farmers are the backbone of our country and none of us wants to live in a country which isn't able to feed itself, so their welfare is crucial to our nation.

"Small business needs to be unburdened of both red and green tape. These are not new ideas, but they're important and I'll be standing for those at this election."

Miss McAlpine weighed straight in on other issues of importance including same sex marriage and coal seam gas ensurinmg she won't be leaving the electorate in any doubt about her stance come election day on September 7.

The CDP's number one Senate candidate, Robyn Peebles, said it was exciting to see young people engaging with the political process.

"Bethany is strong in her Christian faith, with very good insight and maturity that certainly makes her a credible and worthy candidate," Mrs Peebles said.
