DIY chalkboard paint projects are popular on Pinterest

IF you've spent any time on social media site Pinterest, you've likely seen that chalkboard paint projects are incredibly popular.

Perhaps it is because it reminds us of our childhood or maybe it is the opportunity to get creative in an easy, erasable way.

Whatever the case, I couldn't wait to give it a go.

I wanted to create a quirky centrepiece for the table so I picked up a serving tray from Bed Bath and Beyond for $12. You can apply chalkboard paint to almost any surface as long as it is primed properly.

My tray was made from plastic so it required no preparation. I just used a damp cloth to make sure the surface was clean.

Chalkboard paint is available in a variety of sizes from Bunnings Warehouse.

I bought White Knight Chalkboard paint in a 250ml tin for $13.50. You can choose black or chalkboard green. It is handy to have turps on hand in case you spill any.

You will need a paintbrush to apply.

You can get these from Bunnings Warehouse in a three-piece set for $3.30.

Make sure you read the instructions first. White Knight recommends mixing the paint for five minutes before use. Apply a thin layer and wait for it to dry.

Make sure there are no air bubbles. Add a second coat when ready.

Make sure it is dry before attempting to write in chalk, otherwise you will tear the surface. It took mine at least four hours, even though the tin said 20 minutes.

Chalk is available from Typo. I picked up a set of 12 and an eraser for $3.
