CBD has a Mary Poppins flavour

The Mary Poppins Festival is back.
The Mary Poppins Festival is back.

A SPOONFUL of what's to come at this weekend's Mary Poppins Festival will be on offer at today's specially themed markets.

The Heritage City's CBD will be brought to life with town criers from all over the country as well as costumed characters from P.L. Travers' beloved story.

The markets are held every year to preview the festival which has become a favourite on the Fraser Coast's events calendar.

On Sunday families are expected to flock to the Mary River Parklands to take in all the festival has to offer including a guest appearance by the lead actress of the hit Mary Poppins musical currently showing to sell-out crowds in Sydney.

Festival-goers will also be treated to a first look at Australia's latest Mary Poppins theatre show called Bert – A Step In Time.

The production is themed around a contemporary interpretation of the relationship between Chimney Sweep Bert and Mary Poppins.

The Maryborough Players theatrical group won a Regional Arts Development Fund grant to develop the stage show, holding a series of five free theatre workshops with high-profile directors.
