Catkins may take a while to find form at Rosehill

SHE has been a real punters' favourite, but leading trainer Chris Waller has warned his classy mare Catkins may need an extra run to find her hard edge when she resumes in tomorrow's Group Three Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill.

Arguably Australia's best non-Group One winner, Catkins looks appealing odds at $4.20, behind hot favourite Bounding who has been installed at $1.90 on the strength of her super-impressive victory over 1100m at Caulfield when resuming on August 29.

Catkins has won 15 of her 34 starts, and has a great record fresh.

She has won six of seven first-up runs, and was second on the other occasion, although Waller said the six-year-old had lost some of her early brilliance, and had also come back heavier this campaign.

Waller is gearing the daughter of Dubawi for a tilt at the Myer Stakes (1600m) at Flemington at the end of the spring carnival in a bid to break her Group One duck.

Catkins, who has only been out of a place six times in her career, is just shy of $2 million in prize money, an amazing performance for a horse who has not been able to win at the highest level.

The booking of top Kiwi hoop James McDonald, who has won on her at Rosehill, is a significant engagement in the nine-horse field.

Bounding, a daughter of former champion Lohnro, has also built up an impressive record. The five-year-old has eight wins and six minor placing from 15 career start, and like Catkins is well placed against her own sex.

She has drawn perfectly in barrier four for Brenton Avdulla, with the race likely to develop into a battle of tactics between the two jockeys.
