Cate Blanchett wins Golden Globe for Blue Jasmine

CATE Blanchett's Oscars chances have just improved with her winning a Golden Globe in Beverly Hills just minutes ago.

The Aussie actress beat out Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench, Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet to take home the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama.

Blanchett is also up for Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA awards for her acclaimed performance as a New York socialite fallen from grace in director Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.

American Hustle was the big winner of the night with three awards including Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, while 12 Years A Slave was named Best Motion Picture Drama.

Breaking Bad's fifth and final season was recognised with two awards: Best TV Series Drama and Best Actor in a TV Series Drama for star Bryan Cranston, while Behind the Candelabra was named Best TV Movie or Mini-series.

There's sure to be interest in Andy Samberg's TV comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which has yet to air in Australia, after it took home two awards including Best TV Comedy over The Big Bang Theory.

Dallas Buyers Club will also be more highly anticipated ahead of its release in Australia on February 13 after stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto were named Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively.
