Campbell trio helps Sharks beat Hungary

AUSTRALIA has beaten Hungary for the first time since 1996 to finish fifth at the World League finals in Italy.

After trailing early, three goals from Richie Campbell saw the Sharks run out 9-6 winners to finish one spot below their fourth placing from Dubai last year.

The Aussies also beat the USA (10-9) and China (13-3) in the group games, but lost to Italy (7-5), Serbia (12-8) and Brazil (9-8).

Serbia went on to claim the gold medal - for the seventh time in the past nine years - after beating Croatia 9-6 in the final to earn automatic qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The next major assignment for the Sharks will be the world championship starting in Russia on July 26, where the team has drawn Serbia, Japan and Montenegro. The women's world championship will be held at the same time, with the Aussies drawing Russia, Greece and the Netherlands.
