Cafe is on high alert with competition brewing

WHEN McDonald's Calliope opens its doors a kilometre down the road, Annabelle's Coffee House owner Ann White will be concerned.

While the successful business owner admits there is "no point competing with franchises", Ann is worried the Golden Arches will take away from her morning coffee rush.

"We get all the workers come in during their smokos or for the morning run at about the same time Maccas would be open," Ann said.

Opening Calliope's first cafe in 2009, Ann said she was proud of her small team's efforts.

"We have a team of four to five people and I work six days a week from 4.30am to 5pm," she said.

"I have put a lot of hard work into this business."

Ann said she wasn't looking to cause trouble, but the situation would be concerning for most small retailers in the area.

Recently, Chicken Treat and Pizza Place Calliope set up shop in town.
