Byron's Kyuss King wins Under 16's title
BYRON Bay's own Kyuss King yesterday won the Under 16's crown at this year's NRMA Junior State Titles in pumping 4 - 6 foot waves at Port Macquarie.
This is the second time the young surfer has won the Surfing NSW championship title.
According to the Surfing NSW website, "Kyuss perfectly tuned his explosive repertoire with Middle Rock's long right-hand walls, posting a handful of massive scores.
"The natural-footed surfer held down the lead for a solid portion of the heat and was overtaken momentarily by Sandon Whittake from Avoca, who posted a massive 9.17.
"King was able to claw back the lead in the final minutes of the final scoring an 8.1 and taking back the top spot by a 0.03 margin."
Another Byron Bay surfer Joel Paxton took third place in the Under 16's competition.
"I'm stoked to get this win. I really put in a lot of training leading up to this comp," said Kyuss.
"We had to surf so many different conditions over the 5 days and I was changing equipment to suit the waves.
"Every heat was super hard with a stacked field of competitors.
"The swell picked up and I was so excited we had solid waves for the Quarters, Semi's and Finals, I'm just so stoked to get this win and title.
