Byron trial accompanied by drop in alcohol-fuelled violence

WITH weeks to go before the first six-month trial of the Byron Bay Liquor Accord finishes, the Australian Hotels Association (NSW) has slammed two Byron Bay licensed premises, Aquarius Backpackers and Lala Land, for breaching liquor laws during the trial.

In a statement released to media, association chief executive Paul Nicolaou praised the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing (OLGR) for targeting recalcitrant operators.

"The one positive I get from this is it shows the police and OLGR are true to their word - hammering the recalcitrant operators and leaving the compliant licensees to operate their businesses," Mr Nicolaou said.

Byron Bay Liquor Accord chairwoman Hannah Spalding said the accord would meet on October 9 to vote on details of the next six months of the 12-month trial, with results of the trial so far being promising.

"There has been a 25% decrease in alcohol-related incidents during the trial period," she said.

But Ms Spalding said incidents such as the licensing breaches at two bars had placed the project in jeopardy.

"It reflects badly on the majority of the licensed venues who are doing the right thing," she said.

"No venue is above the law and rogue venues will be punished - that's the message here."
