Byron grave site just a pile of bitumen

REPORTS of a grave site near the Byron Bay treatment works were investigated by police who cordoned off the area over the weekend.

Tweed Byron duty officer Inspector Greg Jago said when officers went to inspect the area they found recent excavation so the area was secured with police tape.

"There was a mound located which was reported to police and as a result the area was secured as a possible crime scene," he said.

"The area was examined by forensic experts.

"The original idea that it was a possible grave site has been discounted as the area was found to contain only excess bitumen."

Insp Jago said road work had been done recently in the area and a pile of bitumen left nearby had grass and weeds growing on it and looked like a grave site.
