Byron Bay surfer king hit in Bali
WELL known Byron Bay local, Matt Scarff was due to be Medivac-ed out of Bali to Darwin on Tuesday afternoon after he sustained major head injuries during an incident in Bali.
His cousin Tony Maguire told the ABC that Mr Scarff, 41, was attacked as he left a nightclub late Friday night and has been in a critical condition since.
"[He was] rushed to hospital in Bali, and unfortunately one of the worst hospitals there, not the international one," he said.
"And since that was obviously early Saturday morning, he's been there ever since [and is] in a pretty bad way, he hasn't been well enough to be moved to the better hospital."
Mr Scarff has undergone brain surgery to relieve pressure on his brain from the injury and his family have reportedly already raised the $50,000 required to transport him to a Darwin Hospital.
Matt lives between Bali and Byron Bay and was not covered by insurance. Friends in Byron Bay and Bali are now rallying to raise money for his ongoing care and treatment.
Matt has for many years run a well-regarded Kuta Beach surf school, Bali Learn to Surf.
