Busy Local Government Week
Byron Shire Council has organised a host of activities to mark Local Government Week from Tuesday, August 3.
The Suffolk Park Integrated Children’s Centre open morning on Wednesday, August 4, will showcase the purpose-built integrated facility that will house the Byron Bay Toy Library, Byron Intervention Service and the Byron Bay Preschool.
The open morning is an opportunity for residents to drop in and walk through the new council facility which will be home for the essential community service providers.
The Mullumbimby Neighbourhood Centre has also been significantly upgraded and will be open to the community from Friday, August 6, from 9am to 11am.
Located next to the Mullumbimby Civic Hall, the building has been upgraded with new wiring, sub-boards and the removal and replacement of the asbestos sub-ceiling and decaying plaster throughout the council-owned building.
The Byron Regional Sport and Cultural Complex will also be open from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday, August 7.
“From Ewingsdale Road it’s hard to see what’s happening in the former paddock,” Mayor Cr Jan Barham said.
“It’s an exciting time on the other side of the fence. The ground is currently being levelled and over the coming weeks the turf is due to go down.”
Parking will be available on-site and staff will be on hand to answer questions on construction progress and potential future use of the complex.
On Friday, August 6, from 11am, a bus tour of multi-award-winning Brunswick area sewerage augmentation scheme will be run through the rehabilitation and construction areas of the site.
“The free bus tour is a chance for interested people to see the design features, benefits and the reasons why the project has been recognised in national award programs,” said Cr Barham.
The council will also run two workshops during the week.
On August 3 from 5.30pm, an ‘Affordable Housing Options’ workshop will look at what options are available in rural and urban areas and the opportunity for dual or multiple occupancies.
On Wednesday, August 4, at 5pm, a workshop on the draft youth policy will be held with the youth council, councillors and interested parties.
The official opening of the Helen Street footbridge on South Golden Beach will take place on Tuesday, August 10, at 10am .
