Bumbling bandit to get boot

US immigration authorities have blocked the 'Dumb and Dumber' bank robber ringleader, Byron Bay's Luke Carroll, from being a free man, despite his four-year jail sentence expiring in the US state of Pennsylvania.

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has slapped a 'detainer' on the 23-year-old, who created world headlines in 2005 for his bumbling, clue-riddled armed hold-up of a Colorado bank with mate Anthony Prince, of Suffolk Park.

Carroll was due for release from the Allenwood Federal Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania today, but the detainer will keep him in US custody pending deportation.

“We do have a detainer on him and he is going to go through the removal process,” ICE spokesman Mark Medvesky said.

The removal process can take days, weeks or months.

Carroll has spent four years behind the steel bars and razor wire of America's harsh federal jail system after pleading guilty to the bank hold-up.

Prince completed his sentence in February at Allenwood, remained in custody for several days and was eventually escorted back to Australia by ICE officers on a civilian passenger plane.
