Housing winners show building sector in positive territory
A RECORD number of entries in the 2013 HIA Jeld-Wen Gold Coast / Northern Rivers Housing Awards is a sign of the industry's resilience say organisers.
The industry award attracted 85 entries, 40 more than 2012, with a particularly high number of entries in the high-end Custom Built Home $1 million to $2 million category said Colin Buttenshaw, executive director of HIA Gold Coast and Northern Rivers .
"There was an increase in the custom-built high-end category as people decided to do their building and access contractors while there was low action in the lower end of the building industry," Mr Buttenshaw said.
"A lot of large projects in the $1 million to $3 million range were undertaken and it shows there are enough people with confidence to continue to invest in the Northern Rivers," he said. "It shows the resilience of the industry and our capacity to create jobs even in a downturn is wonderful."
The winner of the JELD-WEN Gold Coast/Northern Rivers Home of the Year was Northern Rivers builder Heanes Built.
The winning St Helena home is an architecturally designed residence located in an elevated position encompassing magnificent views of Byron Bay and the Tweed Coast, award organisers said.
"Some of the special features include a five metre-high library, staircase to heaven and an infinity pool. The use of rammed earth pavilion walls combined with massive timbers and an attention to detail makes this building unique."
Running a very close second and joint winner for Gold Coast and Northern Rivers Custom Built Home with Heanes Built, was Rodney James Builder. The judges said this was an exceptionally built home in the $1m to $2m range. Custom Built Homes category.
