Buddhist monks greet a new year
SIX Buddhist monks were offered traditional Thai food yesterday as part of a special ceremony for Mackay's Thai community.
The highly respected Buddhist monks from Thailand, Brisbane and Melbourne were in Mackay to help celebrate the Buddhist Festival/Songkran Festival and the traditional Thai New Year.
Sue Amarangura, who is part of the Thai community, said about 70 guests attended the ceremony.
"The monks were offered traditional Thai food," Mrs Amarangura said.
After the monks tasted each dish, the leftover food was then shared amongst the guests.
Scented water was also used during the festival to wash away the old year and welcome the new year.
While they were in the Mackay region, the visiting monks enjoyed a bushwalk at Eungella and visited Daydream Island.
Mrs Amarangura hopes to make the festival an annual event .
She said there had also been talk of setting up a temporary Buddhist Temple.
