Olympian inspires students
SHE’S an Olympic medallist, world record breaker and national TV presenter – so it’s no wonder Brooke Hanson received a rock star welcome when she visited schools on the Coffs Coast yesterday.
Thanks to ETC’s Business Club, Ms Hanson was in town yesterday to speak to students at St Augustine’s Primary School and Bishop Druitt College about goals and motivation.
“It’s absolutely fantastic – the kids are so thrilled to see me and I honestly have to pinch myself and remember I really did achieve the things I did – these kids make you realise how great it was,” Ms Hanson said.
“I speak at a lot of business dinners and swimming clubs and things – but when you get a group of kids who are so excited by what you’ve done it’s so exciting.”
However it wasn’t all business – Ms Hanson has family in Coffs Harbour so yesterday doubled as a holiday.
“I definitely try and spend all of my holidays in Coffs Harbour – my grandfather was one of 16 children and he grew up near the Pet Porpoise Pool on the creek there so all of my family is in this region,” she said.
“We have big family reunions in Coffs every three years where hundreds of us get together. Being from Melbourne any chance I get to come to a warmer climate I jump at.”
ETC general manager Michael Close said it was a great thing to have someone of Ms Hanson’s calibre in town to inspire the youth.
“Brooke is someone they can relate to and people know who she is. She’s so inspirational and it’s great she can talk to the students about goal setting and motivation,” Mr Close said.
“Her story really does have highs and the lows and she proves that if you’re motivated you can succeed. We think she was a perfect choice to speak to the students.”
