Coombell inventor's brolly gadget leaves others in the shade

ADRIAN Hastie could be classed as an 'ideas man', just like Steve from the Aussie movie The Castle.

The Coombell resident has thought up many inventions which have helped him in everyday life.

One invention, the no-hands umbrella, came about due to his hobby of prospecting.

"I was in Western Australia and must have found every bullet casing, lead and scrap metal over there," he laughed.

"I made the umbrella as I thought it was going to be hot in the gold fields and it came in handy."

The normal-sized umbrella is placed in a tube on the wearer's back, and held in place by a chest strap.

"The only problem is you can't use it in a built-up environment," Mr Hastie said. "They have the hat umbrellas you see at the cricket, but this one covers a bit more area and offers some shade to your friend at the same time," he said.

Another of Mr Hastie's inventions is the golf cart edging snipper.

Always using recycled materials, Mr Hastie mounted a whipper snipper on a golf cart, which makes it much lighter to use and gives him a steady hand.

Other inventions include hanging baskets for onions and potatoes, made out of a recycled pedestal fan.
