Cold case to go to coroner

IT’S a mystery which has baffled police and the Nambucca Valley community for 23 years.

Yesterday, detectives renewed their appeal for information on the disappearance of Ian Braund, who was last seen on a farm at Thumb Creek, about 30km from Taylors Arm, in 1987.

He was aged 21 at the time and the cold case is now likely to become a coroner’s inquest.

“Mr Braund had left a Newcastle health facility in February 1987 and was living with his brother on an eight-hectare farm on Taylors Arm Road,” said Detective Senior Constable Justin Welsh, the officer in charge of the investigation.

“Police were told Mr Braund went for a walk on the property with one of his dogs on February 27 and has not been seen since. His dog returned to the farmhouse a few days later with an injured paw.

“Heavy rain and flooding hit the region for about 10 days after Mr Braund went missing, hampering searchers. All of Mr Braund’s possessions were left behind at the farmhouse and his personal bank accounts were not accessed.”

Const Welsh said Mr Braund’s family was still searching for answers.

“Ian was only a young man when he disappeared and his parents, who were living in Adelaide at the time, spent hours travelling to the NSW North Coast and inquiring after him.

“His surviving three brothers and sister still live in South Australia and they still hope for a resolution to his disappearance.

“We are appealing for anyone who remembers Ian being in the district about this time and has information about his movements.

“We anticipate the NSW Coroner’s office will be holding an inquest into Ian’s disappearance in the near future and we hope new information will assist us to prepare the brief.”

Anyone with information about Ian Braund is urged to contact Nambucca Heads detectives on 6598 5324 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
