BOOK: My Droving Days
AUTHOR: Peter Moore and Shirley Moore
PUBLISHER: Allen & Unwin Aust
MY Droving Days follows the ups and downs of Peter Moore's life after he leaves behind a city life to become a long-distance drover.
Set in the 1950s, it chronicles his time spent building fences and rodeo yards, and droving cattle and sheep along the stock routes of western Queensland and NSW.
Peter had his heart set on "going bush" and didn't hesitate to carry through.
From cutting kangaroo's tails with an axe until his hands are bleeding to catching scurvy, his few years spent out bush are nothing short of uneventful.
The characters he meets along the way and ridiculous situations he gets himself into are what make this such a great read.
The book is filled with memorable moments, from Peter getting caught by a beast's horns to taking on a brown snake whilst collecting wild duck eggs.
Peter recounted his stories to his wife Shirley who decided to turn the yarns into this hilarious book.
They paint the outback beautifully and I felt like I was there with him much of the book.
Not being a country girl myself, I still found this an enjoyable read.
