PICKING the brain of the likes of Jon Bon Jovi is one massive leg up in the music industry.

A few lucky and talented Aussies will get to do just that as part of Telstra's Road to Discovery Competition, it was announced tonight.

The American rock band will have a mentorship role in this year's program when they're in the country in December for their Because We Can Tour.

"There is arguably no one better in international music to be able to provide a level of guidance and mentoring in the music industry," Telstra's general manager of media, sponsorships and awards Toby Dewar said.

"Jon Bon Jovi is one of the benchmarks of being a successful musician."

Mr Dewar said the details of Bon Jovi's involvement with the finalists will be finalised in the coming weeks.

Now in its 11th year, the Road to Discovery hosts a dozen heats across regional and capital cities to find emerging talent.

The competition's long list of alumni includes some now familiar names: Jessica Mauboy, Jasmine Rae and Brooke McClymont.

Heat winners will attend a boot camp before finalists vie for songwriting and performance prizes, which include a 12-month music mentorship, return trip and showcase performance at the Americana Music Festival and a $14,000 music development fund.

Byron-based musician Pete Murray has signed on as a mentor this year, and played at tonight's launch event.

"It's about helping younger musicians. Guys like Bon Jovi have lots of experience and are giving back," Murray said.

"It's a hard industry to crack."

Mentors will advise the aspiring musicians on things like how to get gigs, write songs and gain the confidence needed to perform in front of large crowds.

Heats will be held from July through September in Echuca Moama (VIC), Mildura, Adelaide, Townsville, Hobart, Srathfield (NSW), Darwin, Melbourne, Fremantle, Kalgoorlie and Toowoomba.

The winners will be announced at the end of the year to coincide with Bon Jovi's national tour.

Entries open tomorrow.
