Bodyboarders make Surf Festival one to remember

THREE local bodyboarders came so close to making this year's Australian Surf Festival in Coffs Harbour one to truly remember for the home team.

Competing in the Australian Bodyboard Titles, Toormina's Heath Werner, Mitchell Ashcroft from Sandy Beach and Emerald Beach bodyboarder Lauren Tarrent finished runners-up in their divisions of the event at Gallows Beach, which brought the surf festival to a close.

In the masters or over-35 category, Werner was unable to find the required 8.76 wave score to claim victory over former professional bodyboarder Adam Keegan, who nabbed an impressive barrel ride and a combination of manoeuvres to claim a convincing win.

After West Australian Jake Metcalfe won the open mens title, Rory Nelson added another title to the WA kitty, taking out the open drop knee division.

Nelson took a convincing victory in the division with a heat total of 12.60.

Nelson's win edged Ashcroft into second place in the final.

Tarrent finished runner-up in the open womens event, narrowly edging out Zoe Curling but not enough to challenge Queenslander Britt Ladley, who made light work of the tricky conditions, unleashing a multitude of decent turns to take dual victories across the division.

The Gold Coast local posted a respectable 13.60 heat total to keep her opposition at arms length and claim for herself the Australian title.
