A BODY discovered near Rio de Janeiro may be that of missing Australian backpacker Rye Hunt.

Australian authorities are in contact with Mr Hunt's family, as they wait for the body to be recovered and for DNA testing to verify whether or not it is the lost traveller.

The 25-year-old is thought to have disappeared after mistakenly taking a powerful hallucinogenic drug, thinking it was ecstacy.

Instead he and friend Mitchell Sheppard may have taken the drug NBOMe, a synthetic psychedelic that causes irrational and potentially deadly behaviour.

The friends began to argue and soon went their separate ways.

The body was found in Marica, a region about 25km from Rio.

It appears to have come from the water.

Brazilian authorities cancelled a 72-hour sea search after a fisherman spotted a body floating off the Rio coastline, wearing clothes similar to those worn by Mr Hunt when he vanished.

The family have told Australian media there has been no confirmation yet that the remains are those of Mr Hunt.
